It's me again!

Haha. So this semester is over (one down, four to go) and I was thinking of something that I learned in psychology. On our quizzes, we have open ended questions to answer for bonus points. On question asked what we feared (it was more in depth than that, but for my purposes it's simplified). Our teacher mentioned that one of the top three fears that women have is becoming like their mother. To me, that is so sad! I'm already like my mother in so many ways, but have yet to achieve close to what she has.

For example, our keys.

Before I knew it, I had all this crap on my keychain! But don't worry, it's still not as bad as my moms. Haha (sorry mom!).

Second, cooking. My mom is an amazing cook. She can make anything and it all tastes good (except eggplants; blech). Now, while I'm not an amazing cook, I definitely hold my own when it comes to creating in the kitchen.

Ohhhh yeah. That's steamed salmon there with rice and steamed veggies. I made it with our awesome new bamboo steamer (compliments of my family). Brandon died and cried in happiness. :)

Thirdly, reading. I must have got my love of reading from my mom because my dad doesn't read so much. If she could, I know she'd read for days on end. I love to read as well, however, I don't just read. I live books. I devour books. The world the author created becomes my own (even if only in my head). Books are amazing :).

Lastly, crafting. My mom is an awesome crafter. She makes these amazing quilts. Now, I haven't gotten to the point where I can quilt, but I did make Amanda a cool bag for Christmas.

Certainly there are a million more ways that I'm like my amazing mother.

That's my mom! Isn't she pretty :D. In the end, I know that if I become my mom it won't be so bad.

Night shifts: What they don't tell you

For the past month, I've been working three nights a week from 7pm-7am. I cut down to two, but my body is struggling with these changes.

Night shifts wouldn't be so bad if you could be asleep all during the day. Unfortunately, there are things to do like school, maintaining the apartment, grocery shopping, cooking, and maintaining the relationship with my husband. If you're single, not going to school (or taking one or two classes), the night shift is easy easy.

However, if you're like me, the night shift is more like the death shift. What is happening to my body?

First, anxiety. My body is used to sleeping during the night. When I start staying up during the night, it goes "what the crap are you doing?! It's night time!" Second, decreased memory. I used to be able to study and remember everything easily. Now it's like trying to remember things through a fog. It takes twice as much effort to put things into my brain, and twice as much effort to pull it out. With a decrease in the energy I already have, pulling out information drops down my energy even more. Third, energy loss. It would be okay for you if you got a full night's sleep the night before you had a shift, and the day after. However, that doesn't happen. In a 48 hour block, you should be getting 18 hours of sleep. With the night shift it cuts down to 14. Four hours definitely doesn't sound like much, but it is when you're experiencing it, plus it all adds up.

Fourth, appetite change and nutrition disruption. Since I've been working night shift, my appetite has shifted drastically. Each night shift I eat during the middle of the night (like a lunch if it were day). Also, I snack continuously in order to stay awake (especially at 3 am). By the time I get off work, I'm starving and ready for breakfast. Sadly, for breakfast that is, I'm so tired I skip it and go to sleep. The next day I eat when I wake up, and then it's dinner time soon. In other words, you're eating an extra meal and extra snacks. Lastly, no time for anything. My schedule is set in a way that there really isn't time for much fun. It's work, sleep, homework, school, then repeat. Decreased time also means a decrease in exercise. Lack of exercise contributes to muscle atrophy, weakening bones, weight gain, and lack of endorphins.

All in all, the night shift is not ideal for someone in school. It's time for a change.

It's october already

Woohoo! A blog post! Yeaaah....haven't been on this for a while, but it's understandable. I love to make my life complicated :). For instance, right now I'm in nursing school as a first semester-er, and it's a doozy! Not. Well, most of my classes are pretty easy, it's just that anatomy and physiology take up a lot of time. I also started working graves as a cna. I'm so brilliant, right?

The picture here is a brain ice cube in red juice. We thought it looked cool because it was like blooood.

Ahh yes, musings from my distorted thoughts. Today I was thinking that I will make another blog depicting my adventures with a soon-to-be-mine sewing machine. Then I realized that I'd anything, I'm eclectic. This applies to my tastes in movie, music, etc. Case in point: Right now, I have just finished trying out several Linux distros on my mac laptop and installing several retro gaming systems. Computer skils: check. Next, I've tried out several recipes (successfully, to the joy of Brandon) ranging from chocolate pancakes to basil chicken cocunut curry to mini cupcakes. Culinary skills: check. Also, in going to nursing school. Academic/science skills: check. Now while I'm developing all of these, I've decided to learn how to sew my own clothes. Sewing skills: not so much. Hence the desire to create a blog about my projects. Wish me luck :D

I'm turning Purple and Black

33 days!

In the past couple of days, I have managed to turn myself purple and black. First, I finally finished the invitations for the receptions. However, my printer decided to show its love by exploding black ink. Subsequently, I had black ink marks that only just barely came off. The purple came from a stamp with our address on it, where the label part kept shifting. In order to fix it, you had to move it. I, of course, decided that my fingers would work just as well. So...purple ink on my fingers.

Lastly, I have a ginormous bruise on my leg. Haha...the klutz strikes again. I was at the doctors office and was getting off the table when I slipped and sliced my leg against the metal stirrup edge. Oops.

Isn't it lovely?! It bled through my pants when I got it. I think it looks kind of like a face. When I told my dad what happened he looked at me like I was born yesterday. Also, I tried to show my little brother while he was eating, but he refused to look because "I'm eating! That's GROSS SHAR!" Ahh yes, the little things we do to torture siblings.

Why so serious?

In conclusion, I am a messy klutz. But because of it I'm great at basic first aid and cleaning :)

The Dreaded 2am

It's 2:26 in the morning. Why am I up? You wonder, as do I. The answer, simple and poignant, is STRESS.

Planning a wedding is the WORST. Seriously, why didn't we just elope? Oh, I have an answer for that. Enter: the parents. Although I blame them for this fiasco, I am grateful for all they did. This fast-approaching bash would not have been as cool as it's going to be. You win some and you lose some (cliché, I know).

For instance. Before my parents my wedding would have looked something like this:

Brandon would look so hot in a mullet. The dog would be ring bearer, of course.

Now, my wedding will look something like this:

Okay, okay, just kidding. It will be pretty and fun, etc etc.

Too bad I can't sleep and start thinking "how will we get everything over to Utah?!" or "who should I sit Mr.?/ms.? next to?" or "I still need to figure out what to store here!" A lot of times I just think, "I'm tired, can you shut up and leave me alone?"

Even as I write this, I zone out and think "what about this," and other useless questions.

/sigh

Now that it's 3 (great...bad Shar, bad Shar!) I shall try again.

49 Days

49 days until the wedding. :o So much to do so little time!

O.o

Does anyone even read this?

Today is the last day of the week...and PAYDAY! Too bad this entire week I've been sick, either from what the doctor thinks is bronchitis, or nausea that may or may not be the side effects of the medicine. Basically I am uncomfortable all the time.

Yesterday I got off work, and class was canceled, so I went to the temple. I was there for two and a half hours...there were so many people. But I got a lot of reading done, so woohooo!

I am glad that classes are almost over, but I still have my IS classes to finish, which will take a lot of time. What I need is another month where I can just work so that I can finish up my IS stuff. Too bad it doesn't work that way.

The other day I was quoted in the Daily Universe, the school paper, because my friend is in the class that writes for the paper. http://universe.byu.edu/node/1084 There's the link there, in case you didn't believe me.

I've decided that I am sick of computers, but there is no way for me to stay away from them. I use them at work, and then at home for schoolwork. There's no escape! My new plan is to go somewhere and bring my books that don't require internet use, and maybe write out essays on paper first and then type them later. All this staring at screens is making me even more blind, my glasses aren't strong enough anymore and it's only August. I won't be able to get new glasses for another five months. Lame.

Ok, I decided to edit and add more. Besides classes ending in two weeks, I'll also be moving out of the crestwood in two weeks. There's nothing I really have to say...

Om Shanti Om

The International Cinema on BYU campus showed this movie tonight, and I chose to go with a couple of friends and enjoy a night of Bollywood. I totally agree with Angela in that I would rather be a Bollywood star than a Hollywood star. It's like a musical only better! Om Shanti Om is about a man named Om who is completely in love with a star named Shanti. Om is just a junior artiste, but dreams of being the star of the show. By chance or by destiny, Om and Shanti meet and end up spending a day together. Unfortunately, Om finds out that Shanti is married to the producer, and is heart broken. However, misfortune befalls Shanti when her husband brutally murders her out of greed. Om tries to save her, but fails and dies as well. He is reincarnated as a movie star and as the son of a famous actor. Due to certain circumstances, Om remembers his past life memories and decides to get back at the producer. Filled with bright colors, cheesy lines (Oh fish!), romance, drama, comedy, Om Shanti Om is a bollywood movie to the max. When actors are dancing and singing all over the place what more could you ask for? A movie I would definitely watch again. :D

And now I must go back to my raging headache and paper. Sad day.

:o Hello again!

Yes, it seems as if this blog has died. But it hasn't! I swear! I have decided to make another blog depicting my travels and adventures in Spain. It's under construction right now, but will be up and running as soon as I make an awesome template. The address will be paellapan.blogspot.com. In the meantime, here is a really weird dream I had a while ago. Names have been changed due to...privacy concerns?

In my dream, I was dead. I could not remember how I came to be dead and all I knew was that I was on a silver escalator going downwards. Looking up, I saw that I was only on the bottom half of the escalator. The half ended on a flat strip of white tile with brown spots at the bottom, with an invisible wall at the end. I walked through this invisible wall; it felt as if I were being sucked in and everything went black. The world on the other side looked exactly as the world where the escalator was. The only difference was that there were people everywhere. Most of the buildings were empty, except there was one filled with people dancing and partying. Figuring that the party building would be the best place to go, I headed that way. As I entered the building, a guy took my hand. I cannot remember his name, but we will call him Jake from now on. He was tall and had dark curly hair, and seemed to be Italian descent. His eyes were dark, almost on the verge of black. He work a black sweatshirt and jeans.

Walking around the party, I hear conversations covering a range of topics. The atmosphere of the party was relaxed and fun, with people mingling and talking to each other. Jake takes me to another room that would be my own room from then on. It was very small, consisting of a twin sized bed with brown blankets and a small desk. On the desk was a laptop plugged into the wall. Curious, I tapped the screen to get out of screensaver mode. One shortcut looks like an internet browser, so I click on it. A window pops open, taking up the entire screen. It was a social network program that kept all dead people in touch with each other. Jake was showing me how to use it when a box opened up; it was an im from a guy named Frank. He wanted to know how his daughters Diane and Julia were doing, both whom I knew. I tell him his daughters are fine, and not to worry.

Jake decides to take me to the surface, and we started walking towards the escalator. We pass a building that was curvy and looked as if it were collapsing. He told me that it was the hospital, and I could see workers in green scrubs entering and exiting the building. Although everyone was dead, bones could still break and veins could still bleed. There was another death as well, a permanent one, where you could never ever visit the living world again. We crossed the barrier to the world of the living. The living could not see the dead, although the dead could see the living. There were hundreds of people walking around, but there was a subtle difference between the living and the dead. The most noticeable difference was that the dead all wore a black sweatshirt with a logo in red on the back.

Jake and I went to my old room, and we were looking around when I suddenly had to go to the bathroom. When I was done, I looked into the toilet and there was this thick black goo with a horrid smell in it. As the smell reached my nose I stumbled backward and almost puked. I ran back to Jake and asked him what in the world was wrong with me. He informed me that when I am in the living world, my body will deteriorate. Our insides rot when we are in this world, causing our breath to stink and anything coming out of our bodies to be a black goo.

Back in my room, I saw my books and a rocking chair and my memories came flooding back to me. I asked Jake why I couldn't take some of my belongings back with me, and he said that if an object was promised to someone, it could not be taken back down. I was most depressed about not being able to take my books back. As I was thinking this, I hear my Aunt's voice behind me. I turn around, wondering why she was dead to only to realize that she was not. She and my mom were dancing to music and yelling "We will triumph!" while raising their fists. Tears rolled down my face as I begged Jake to let me talk to them, but he couldn't. These were the rules. This was our fate.

We started heading back, and as we got to the escalator, Jake picked me up and practically flew through the force field. The moment I was past the barrier, my body became stronger and fresher.

The rest of the dream isn't interesting enough to write about, but perhaps I will make something up another day. :)

2 days until Spain!

Day 6 of the Reunion:
In the morning, my mom, two of my aunts, and me went to a water aerobics lesson! It was fun, and if you sweated, no big deal. You were already in the pool. Later in the afternoon, the girls went to see Mamma Mia. Great movie! Included some really attractive Greek guys. Mom and Dad went to the Brian Regan concert, while us kids went to pick food up at Bajio and then went home to watch three movies (Dragonheart, Dragonheart: The New Beginning, and Willow).

Day 7 (Thursday) of the Reunion:
Horseback riding! My horse's name was Charlie and he was a smart horsie. We just went up and back down a trail on the horses. Christopher hasn't stopped talking about it since... A little while after, just our family went to Tucanos. Christopher was in heaven, all you can eat meat. Amanda liked the all you can eat rice part. We went swimming with Mark & Cathy's kids later that evening.

Day 8 of the Reunion:
Checkout! We all cleaned out the condo we were in and bolted, heading for Provo. The plan was to hike Timpanogos Cave with Mark & Cathy + kids. However, when we got there, we discovered that the tickets were all SOLD OUT because a ranger didn't show up. Then the tickets for Saturday were all sold out as well. We would have to get there at 6:30 on Saturday to get in line, and still not even have a guarantee. We took family pictures instead. Christopher was stung by a bee by the river. After the pictures, everyone headed to Iceberg for shakes and fries. It was chaotic, to say the least. My parents checked into their hotel, and Alex went to his apartment and I went to mine.

Day 9 (Saturday) of the Reunion:

We spent the entire afternoon at my Grandparent's house in SLC. Mostly sitting around talking about the family and eating watermelon. Later, we went to Selena's house for barbecuing and socializing. I left my car there for the rest of the year :'(. This was also the last day that I'll be seeing my family until the end of the year. Sad day indeed.

Day 10 of the Reunion:
This day doesn't really count because this is when everyone who hadn't already left bolted out of Utah. I went to dinner at Brittney's house though!

Today leaves only two more days until I board a plane for the other side of the world, by myself.

Day 5 of the Reunion

Today we went on the ziplines! They were over where the Winter Olympics were held. There were two ziplines, and of course we went on both :). After sliding down the hill with the ziplines (I lost the race), we moved on to the Quicksilver (where I was too slow and got bumped into).

Next was an entire afternoon/evening spent in Salt Lake City with my dad's side of the family for the celebration of my grandmother's 78th birthday. Ahh, so fun to see the contrast. Instead of discussing iPhones, lesbians and anorexics were the topic of choice. Oh, and how I'm going to get married in Spain (not happening). Seeing some cousins I haven't seen in a while was the best part though (Paulie!).

This entire trip so far has been exhausting. I start falling asleep around 8:00 pm, which is incredibly weird. So on that note, ciao!

Day 4 of the Reunion

Day 1:

After the hectic packing and storing, my family and I all headed up to Park City. The night at our place of residence was filled with zombies, godzilla, and monkeys.

Day 2:

Saturday was the first family reunion on the list. It was Grandma's side with the Osguthorpes, Platts, and Koncurats. We played partner tag, ate sandwiches, and heard the history of Grandma O (my great-grandma) and Grandpa O (her husband). The amount of iphone's in sight was a true testament to the nerdiness and gadget-loving-ness of my mom's side of the family.

Day 3:

Sunday. We had a birthday party for my Grandma at night. It was a glorious night filled with ice cream cake, singing, and chaotic noise.

For right now, that's pretty much it :).

July is NEXT WEEK

A coworker commented today that we have friday off next week. Why? Because it's the 4th of July! Already! That means I have only 7 more weeks of work left, and 8 weeks before I leave this country. Only 8 weeks to get everything together. Eeek, how intimidating (sort of, but not really).

Friday, June 20, 2008

Woohoo it's friday!! TGIF right?

Today at work we have "treat friday" except I totally forgot that it was friday and didn't bring anything in. Our department went out and bought J-dogs though, and it was my first time having them, so good.

One of my roommates moves out today, which is kind of sad. There will be one less person in the apartment now. She claims she'll come visit us a lot though, but we'll see how busy she gets at home.

Today Alex and I are going to his birthday dinner at Fudruckers (of all places, eww). All well, it's his choice.

I had a weird dream filled with honey and zombie like creatures and cute boys. I'll have to write it out and post it. But until then, goodnight. And good luck. (Hey, that's a great movie!)

Provo Blackout!

It was a sunny morning when I arrived at work today. I thought it would be another typical day at work, but how wrong I was. On the first floor of the building, I begin to punch in when POOF the lights in the entire building shut off. Anything connected to electricity (including the water fountains) were out. After a few minutes, most of the electricity came back on. Unfortunately (or fortunately, depending on how you look at it) the computers in Data Entry, the department I work in, were not coming back on. We sat around and talked, then trekked down to the break room to get some food out of the fridge. As we were walking back to our area, the lights mysteriously came on. Apparently, the entire Provo area blacked out. Something the Provo City did shut down the entire area, including all of BYU campus.

This is me at work! Hahahaha. It was taken for the Photo Directory in our databases. It was before my haircut though, and my move to Data Entry. Next I'll post a picture of the origami tiger I made.

Don't let the heat get to you :D

So long PA

Soon I will be on a journey across America, for the purpose of continuing my education. Appropriately, the words of Pink Floyd come to mind, “We don’t need no education.” Unfortunately in today’s world, Pink Floyd’s philosophy fails, and I am compelled to obtain a degree. The time I have left in good old Pennsylvania will have to be used wisely in terms of packing and cleaning. Sadly, neither are very exciting tasks, which accounts for the delay in starting both.
